Percentage – Solved Examples

Example 1: A local cricket team played 300 one day matches in a year and won 25% of them. How many matches did they win in a year?

Solution: Given that, Number of matches played by cricket team = 300

Percentage of won matches = 25%

total matches won by them = 25% of 300

                                        = (25/100) x 300

total matches won by them = 75

               Hence, They won 75 matches.

Example 2: A shopkeeper bought 500 mangoes and 300 apples, he found that 25% of mangoes and 15% of apples were rotten. Find the percentage of fruits in good condition.

Solution: Given that, total number of fruits bought by shopkeeper

= 500 + 300

= 800

Number of rotten mangoes = 25% of 500

                                         = (25/100)x500

                                         = 125

Number of rotten apples = 15% of 300

                                         = (15/100)x300

                                         = 45

total number of rotten fruits = 125 + 45

 total number of rotten fruits = 170

Therefore, total number of fruits in good condition

                                          = 800 – 170

                                          = 630

Percentage of fruits in good condition

                                         = (630/800)x100

                                         = 630/8

  Percentage of fruits in good condition = 78.7

Example 3: David secures 850 marks out of 1000 in his half yearly examination. Find the percentage of marks obtain by him?

Solution: maximum marks of the examination = 1000

marks secured by David = 850

Therefore,
 percentage of marks secured = (850/1000)x100%

percentage of marks secured = 85%

Hence, David secured in the examination 85% marks.

Example 4: In a school 60% of the students are boys and the number of girls in the school is 480.
Find the number of boys in the school?

Solution: Let the number of students in school be 100

Then, number of boys = 60

∴ number of girls = 100 – 60

number of girls = 40

Now,
total number of students, when the number of girls is 40 = 100

Then,

total number of students, when the number of girls is 480 = (100/40)x480

      = 100 x 12

     = 1200

∴ number of boys = 1200 – 480

∴ number of boys = 720

                 Hence, number of boys = 1200

Example 5: In an exam John secured 360 marks. if he secured 60% marks, find the maximum marks?

Solution:  Let the maximum marks be a

                   john’s marks = 60% of a

                   john’s secured 360 marks

                   Then, 60% of a = 360

                      (60/100)x a = 360

                      a = (360 x 100)/60

                      a = 36000/60

                      a = 600

Therefore, john’s got 360 marks out of 600.
