Increase and Decrease Percentage

Before learn calculating, percentage increase and decrease we will see that what is a percentage?

Definition: A Percent is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100, in other words Percent is a fraction of denominator 100.

Percent is denoted by the symbol %. ‘Per’ ‘cent’ means out of 100.

The percent symbol is written to the right side of the number, like this 15%.

Example: 25% (read as twenty five percent) 

                 equal to  25% = 25/100

means 25/100 that is 25 part from 100, this can also be written as 0.25.

                          or  25% = 25/100 = 0.25

Now we will see how to calculate percentage increase and decrease or percentage change.

When a quantity has grow or bigger, then we  calculate percentage increase.

When a quantity has shrink or smaller, then we  calculate percentage decrease.

Percentage – Increase

There are steps to calculating percentage increase

         To calculate a percentage increase, 

1. First we find the difference between comparing values(increase). 

2. Increase = New value – Original value

3. Divide the increase value by original value and multiply by 100. 

4. If the answer is positive number, it means positive values shows percentage change is a increase.  

Percentage – Decrease

There are steps to calculating percentage decrease

        To calculate a percentage decrease, 

1. First we find the difference between comparing values(decrease). 

2. Decrease = Original value – New value 

3. Divide the decrease value by original value and multiply by 100.

4. If the value is negative number, it means negative values shows percentage change is decrease.

Positive values shows percentage change is a increase and Negative values shows percentage change is decrease.
