Decimal Division by Power of 10

Dividing decimal numbers by 10, 100, 1000……

Dividing any decimal by any power of 10 or 10, 100, 1000, we just move the decimal point towards the left as many places as the number of zeros in the power of 10.

When we divide any decimal by 10, we move the decimal point one place to the left.

When we divide any decimal by 100, we move the decimal point two place to the left.

Similarly, we divide any decimal by 1000, we move the decimal point three place to the left.

Example: 7.56 ÷ 100

100 has two zeros, so we will move two places to the left to the decimal point. Therefore, the result is

7.56 ÷ 100 = .0756

Example: 543.8 ÷ 1,000

Here, 3 zeros in 1,000, so, move the decimal point in 543.8 to the left 3 places.

543.8 ÷ 1000 = 0.543,800

543.8 ÷ 1000 = 0.543,800

Example:

93.542 ÷ 10 = 9.3542,

93.542 ÷ 100 = 0.93542,

93.542 ÷ 1,000 = 0.093,542,

93.542 ÷ 10000 = 0.00935,420

Divide decimals by power of 10

10^-1 = 1/10

10^-2 = 1/100

10^-3 = 1/1000

10^-4 = 1/10000

Example: let’s see a example

43564.2 ÷ 10^-1 = 4356.42

Here exponent is -1, so, move 1 place to the left to the decimal point.

43564.2 ÷ 10^-2 = 435.642

Here exponent is -2, so, move 2 places to the left to the decimal point.

43564.2 ÷ 10^-3 = 43.5642

Here exponent is -3, so, move 3 places to the left to the decimal point.

43564.2 ÷ 10^-4 = 4.35420

Here exponent is -4, so, move 4 places to the left to the decimal point.

Example 1: Divide 19.8 ÷ 10

19.8 x 10 move the decimal point 1 place to the left.

Solution: 1.98 ÷ 10 = 1.98

Example 2: Divide  425.732 ÷ 100

Solution: 425.732 ÷ 100 move the decimal point 2 place to the left.

4.25732 ÷ 100 = 4.25732

Example 3: Divide  0.04 ÷ 100

Solution: 0.04 ÷ 100 move the decimal point 2 place to the left.

0.04 ÷ 100 = 0.0004

Example 4: Divide  0.003 ÷ 100

Solution: 0.003 ÷ 100 move the decimal point 2 place to the left.

0.003 ÷ 100 = 0.00003

Example 5: Divide 23.451 ÷ 1000

Solution: 23.451 ÷ 1000 move the decimal point 3 place to the left.

23 .451 ÷ 1000 = 0.023451

Example 6: Divide 651324 ÷ 10,000

Solution: 651324 ÷ 10,000 move the decimal point 4 place to the left

651324 ÷ 10000 =65.1324
