Decimal Numbers

A number whose whole number part and fractional part is separated by a decimal point is known as a decimal number.

A dot (.) represents a decimal point.

When the numbers are expressed in the decimal form are called decimal numbers.

In a decimal number decimal point separates the whole number part and the fractional part.

 Example: We see a number

35 . 4

The number is “thirty five and four tenths” the decimal point is written between Ones and Tenths.

Number 35.4 has 3 Tens, 5 Ones, and 4 tenths.

 Place Value

In decimal number system each digit has a value depending on the place of the digit in a number is known as the place value of the digit.

When numbers move right from the decimal point,
each place value is divided by 10.

Example: The first digit after the decimal represents the tenths place. 5.4

The second digit after the decimal represents the hundredths place. 3.62

The third digit after the decimal represents the thousandths place. 4.237

We continue it for the remaining digits to fill in the
place values until there are no digits left.

Relationship between decimal number and fractions.

A unit is represented by 1.

 1 unit divide into 10 equal parts = 1/10 = 0.1 = Tenths

 1 unit divide into 100 equal parts = 1/100 = 0.01 = Hundredths

 1 unit divide into 1000 equal parts = 1/1000 = 0.001 = Thousandths
