Word Problems – Percentage – Increase & Decrease          

Example 1: Gasoline price in year 2017 is $5.38/gallon, and in 2018 it’s price 5.68. What is the percentage of increase.

Solution: Original price of gasoline is = $5.38/gallon
New price = $5.68

price increase = 5.68 – 5.38

price increase  = 0.38/gallon

                       = (0.38/5.38) x 100  

percentage increase = 7.06/gallon

Example 2: The price of a bag was $4.29 and now it’s price is the $4.09. What is the percentage of decrease.

Solution: Original price of bag is = $4.29, New price = $4.09

price decrease = 4.29 – 4.09

                         price decrease  = 0.20

                                   = (0.20/4.29) x 100

percentage decrease = 4.66

Example 3: The price of a mobile was $15 and now it’s price is the $18. What is the percentage of increase.

Solution: Original price of mobile is = $15

New price = 18

                     price increase = $18 – $15

                     

price increase  = $3


                = (3/15) x 100  

percentage increase = 20%

Example 4: A quantity decreased from $80 to $65. what is the percentage of decrease. 

Solution: Original price is = $80

New price = $65

                        price decrease = 80 – 65

                         price decrease  = 15

                                    = (15/80) x 100  

percentage decrease = 18.75%

Example 5: John works 25 hours in first week and 35 hours in second week. what is the percentage of increase.

Solution: John works in first week = 25 hours

John works in second week = 35 hours

New work hours = 35 – 25

    working hours increase = 35 – 25

                       increase  = 10 hours

                               = (10/25) x 100  

percentage increase = 40%
