Division – Dividend – Divisor – Quotient – Remainder

 There are four basic mathematical operations.
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

                                Symbol

The mathematical Symbols used for for division are obelus (➗)  or slash / or a line.

For example – “8 divided by 4

 8 ÷ 4,   or   8/4

Division is one of the four basic operation of arithmetic.

When we divide a number by another number, we will use terms dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder.

In this chapter we will see the relationship between the dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder.

We can write the relationship among dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder as given below.

1. When 23 dividing by 10, 2 is the quotient and 3 is the remainder, because 23 = 2 x 10 + 3.

Dividend = Divisor x Quotient + Remainder

1. The number which we divide is called the dividend.

2. The number by which we divide is called the divisor.

3. The result we get is called the quotient.

4. The number left over is called the reminder.

2. When 38 dividing by 4, 9 is the quotient and 2 is the remainder, because 38 = 4 x 9 + 2.

3. When 109 dividing by 10, 10 is the quotient and 9 is the remainder, because 109 = 10 x 10 + 9.

                  Here,   Dividend = 109

                               Divisor = 10

                             Quotient = 10

  Remainder = 9

4. When 28 dividing by 5, 5 is the quotient and 3 is the remainder, because 25 = 5 x 5 + 3.

                 Here,   Dividend = 28

                               Divisor = 5

                             Quotient = 5

Remainder = 3

5. When 49 dividing by 6, 8 is the quotient and 1 is the remainder, because 49 = 6 x 8 + 1.

                  Here,   Dividend = 49

                               Divisor = 6

                             Quotient = 8

Remainder = 1

6.When 59 dividing by 11, 5 is the quotient and 4 is the remainder, because 55 = 11 x 5 + 4.

                 Here,   Dividend = 59

                               Divisor = 11

                             Quotient = 5

Remainder = 4
