Conversion of Improper Fractions into Mixed Fractions With Examples

Improper fractions can also represented as a mixed number.

To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, these steps are follows.

Step1 : Divide the numerator by denominator.

Step 2 : Find the remainder and the quotient.

Step 3 : The quotient becomes the whole number of resultant mixed fraction and the remainder becomes the numerator of the new fraction.

The denominator part of the new fraction is remains the same as the original denominator.

Let us understand this by an example of an improper fraction.

Example: Convert the improper fraction 16/3 into a mixed number.

Step1 : Divide the numerator by denominator.

Dividing 16 by 3.

Step 2 : Find the remainder and the quotient.

we get 5 as the quotient and 1 as the remainder.

Step 3 : The quotient becomes the whole number of resultant mixed fraction and the remainder becomes the numerator of the new fraction.

Here, quotient is 5 and remainder is 1 and numerator.

The denominator part of the new fraction is remains the same as the original denominator.

Denominator of the given improper fraction is 3, but denominator of mixed fraction remains same.

So, denominator of mixed fraction will be 3.

Thus, 16/3 will be written as 5 1/3 as a mixed number.

After dividing numerator by denominator, if there is no remainder, then there is no fraction, the result is simply a whole number.

Example: Convert the improper fraction 8/5 into a mixed number.

Dividing 8 by 5, we get 1 as the quotient and 3 as the remainder.

Thus, 8/5 will be written as 1 3/5 as a mixed number.

Example: Convert the improper fraction 14/3 into a mixed number.

Dividing 14 by 3, we get 4 as the quotient and 2 as the remainder.

Thus, 14/3 will be written as 4 2/3 as a mixed number.

Example: Convert the improper fraction 15/2 into a mixed number.

Dividing 15 by 2, we get 7 as the quotient and 1 as the remainder.

Thus, 15/2 will be written as 7 1/2 as a mixed number.
