Addition and Subtraction of Integers on number Line
Addition and Subtraction of Integers on number Line
Steps for addition and subtraction of integers on a number line are as follows.
Step1: Draw a number line.
Step 2:
For addition and subtraction, we clearly understand that,
- For a positive number, we have to move right from zero on the number line.
- For a negative number, we have to move left from zero on the number line.
Examples of addition on a number line
Example 1: Solve 1 + 2 = ?Step 1: Here both numbers 1 and 2 are positive, so to represent these numbers on number line,
we start from first number. For number 1 we begin at zero(0) and move 1 units to right from 0. Now we located the first number 1 on the number line.
Step 2: After this now we add 2, means we move 2 units to the right from first number 1.
Step 3: After doing this we arrive at 3.
Therefore, 1 + 2 = 3
Example 2: Solve 3 + 1 = ?
To add 3 +1, we follow same steps.
Therefore, 3 + 1 = 4
Example 3: Solve – 6 + 4 = ?
Step 1: The first step is, mark the first number on the number line which is – 6. For this we move 6 units left from 0.
Step 2: Now add number four (4) to given first number means we move the 4 units to the right from first number -6,
Step 3: After doing this we arrive at -2.
Therefore, -6 + 4 = -2
Example 4: Solve 11 + (-5) = ?
Step 1: The first step is mark the first number on the number line which is 11.
Step 2: Now add number five (-5) which is negative means we move the 5 units to the left from first number 11.
Step 3: After doing this we arrive at 6.
Therefore, (11) + (-5) = 6
Example 5: Solve – 9 + 5 = ?
Step 1: The first step is mark the first number on the number line which is – 9.
Step 2: Now add number five (5) means we move the 5 units to the right from first number -9.
Step 3: After doing this we arrive at -4.
Therefore, -9 + 5 = -4 Example 5: Solve (- 4) + ( – 5) = ?Step 1: The first step is mark the first number on the number line which is – 4.
Step 2: Now add number five (-5) which is negative means we move the 5 units to the left from first number -4.
Step 3: After doing this we arrive at -9.
Therefore, (-4) + (-5) = -9
Example 6: Solve – (5) – (-11) = ?
Step 1: The first step is mark the first number on the number line which is – 5.
Step 2: Now subtract minus 11, means add plus 11, so we move 11 units to the right from first number which is -5.
Step 3: After doing this we arrive at 6. Therefore, (-5) – (-11) = 6
