Equivalent Fraction

Definition:

Equivalent fractions are the fractions that have different numerator and denominators but represent the same or equal value.

Example: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 all are equivalent fractions, because they all are equal to 1/2.

Similarly 10/20, 20/40, 30/60 and 40/80 all are equivalent fractions, because they all are equal to 1/2.

Fractions also represent parts of a collection or a set.

Example: There are total 7 people. 5 out of 7 are men.

So the fraction of men is (5/7) five-sevenths.

2 out of 7 are women.

So the fraction of women is (2/7) two-sevenths.

Let us understand methods in which we can make equivalent fractions.

There are 2 methods of finding an equivalent fraction of a given fraction.

  1. Method 1: Multiplying method
  2. Method 2: Dividing method

1. Method 1: Using multiplying Method to Find the Equivalent Fractions

We can multiply both the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by same number.

To find the equivalent fraction of any fraction multiply both the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by same number.

Example: To find the equivalent fractions of 2/3. Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number 2, we get 4/6.

Thus, 4/6 is an equivalent fraction of 2/3.

We also find some other equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by same number.

2. Method 2: Using Division Method to Find the Equivalent Fractions

We can divide the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by same number.

In this method, divide both the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by same number.

To find the equivalent fraction of any fraction divide the numerator and the denominator of the given fraction by same number the new fraction will be equivalent to the original fraction.

Example: To find the equivalent fractions of 24/36.

First we will find their common factors. We know that 2 is common factor of both 24 and 36.

So an equivalent fraction of 24/36 can be found by dividing its numerator and denominator by 2, we get 12/18.

Thus, 12/18 is an equivalent fraction of 24/36. We also find some other equivalent fractions by dividing the numerator and denominator of the given fraction by same number.
