Division of Algebraic Fractions with Examples

The rules for solving division of fractions and division of algebraic fractions are same.

In fractions,

First fraction ÷ Second fraction = First fraction x 1/Second fraction

In algebraic fractions,

First algebraic fraction ÷ Second algebraic fraction = First algebraic fraction x 1/Second algebraic fraction

How to divide algebraic fractions

When dividing algebraic fractions, keep the first fraction as it is, change the division sign into multiplication sign and flip(invert) the second fraction upside down.

Let us understand with an example.

Let us see the steps to division of algebraic fractions.

Step1: Invert(flip) the second fraction and change division sign to multiplication sign

Step 2: Multiply first fraction by second fraction.

Step 3: Factorise the numerators and denominators. and cancel the fractions common to both numerators and denominators.

Step 4: Apply the multiplication to obtain the answer.

We observe that the common factor in the numerator and denominator of the fraction 12/2 is 2.

Therefore, the numerator and denominator are divided by 2, and 6/1 is its lowest form.
