What are Mixed Numbers Definition & Examples
Mixed Numbers
Definition:
A “Mixed Number” is combination of a whole number and a fraction.
Example: If we have two whole cakes and one half cake, then we describe this as 2 and 1/2 cakes or 2 1/2 cakes.
2 1/2 (Two and a half) is a mixed number.
It is also called Mixed fraction.
Writing mixed numbers as fraction
Mixed numbers can also expressed as a fraction. In above example each whole cake contains two half cakes that means four half cakes and one half cake. so total is
(1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2+ 1/2) + 1/2 = 5/2 cakes.
One more method to write the mixed numbers as fraction.
Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (bottom number).
Step2: Add the result to the numerator (top number).
Example: 5 3/2
Step1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (bottom number).
The whole number is 5 and the denominator is 2,
5 x 2 = 10
Step2: Add the result to the numerator (top number).
The numerator is 3,
10 + 3 = 13
Therefore, the numerator is 13, and the denominator is 2, and fraction is 13/2.
Example: 4 5/6
Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (bottom number).
The whole number is 4 and the denominator is 6,
6 x 4 = 24
Step2: Add the result to the numerator (top number).
The numerator is 5,
24 + 5 = 29
Therefore, the numerator is 29, and the denominator is 6, and fraction is 29/6.
Example: 6 4/3
Step1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (bottom number).
The whole number is 6 and the denominator is 3,
6 x 3 = 18
Step2: Add the result to the numerator (top number).
The numerator is 4,
18 + 4 = 22
Therefore, the numerator is 22, and the denominator is 3, and fraction is 22/3.
Example: 8 3/5
Step1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator (bottom number).
The whole number is 8 and the denominator is 5,
8 x 5 = 40
Step2: Add the result to the numerator (top number).
The numerator is 3,
40 + 3 = 43
Therefore, the numerator is 43, and the denominator is 5, and fraction is 43/5.
