Division: 4 digit number by 2 digit number

Long Division

These steps are follow to divide, a four digit number by a two digit number:

Example: Divide 9586, by 22.

In this example, we want to divide 9586 by 22. The divisor (22) has 2 digits numbers, so we have take the first two digits from the dividend that is (95).
Now 95 is bigger than 22, so we can divided.

Step 1: To divide 9586 by 22, we take the first two digits of the dividend, that are (95), and divide them by divisor 22.

95 ÷ 22 = 4

Now 4, multiply by the divisor 22.

4 x 22 = 88

Step 2: 88 is smaller than, the dividend (95) therefore 4 does fit, for quotient, now we write the result(88) below the dividend, and subtract the bottom number 88(result), from the top number (95)(dividend).

Step 3: 95 – 88 = 7

Step 4: The result (4) is placed at the top.

Step 5: Now we bring down the next digit from the dividend (8), and we have to divide 78 by 22 repeating the same steps as before.

We divide 78 by divisor 22,

78 ÷ 22 = 3

We write 3 in the quotient and multiply it by the divisor,

3 x 22 = 66

We write the 66 below the dividend and subtract,

78 – 66 = 12

Step 6: We bring down the next digit that is 6

Now we have to divide 126 by 22,

126 ÷ 22 = 5

We write the 5 in the quotient and multiply it by the divisor 22

5 x 22 = 110

Now we subtract 126 – 110 = 16,

Since there are no more digits left in the dividend, we have finished the division of the 2 numbers.

The result of division is 435 and remainder is 16.

Note: If in case we can not perform this subtraction because the dividend is smaller than the result, then we have to choose a smaller number in the quotient until we can subtract.
Once we have done the subtraction, then bring down the next digit of the dividend and continue repeat the steps until there are no more numbers in the dividend.

In the space of the quotient, write the result of this division.
