Properties of a Rectangle – Geometry
Properties of a Rectangle
A rectangle is a two dimensional four sided polygon(quadrilateral), in which the opposite sides are equal and parallel to each other and all four angles are right angles.
In figure ABCD is a rectangle.
Properties of a Rectangle
A rectangle is a quadrilateral.
1. Each interior angle is a right angle.
2. The Opposite sides are equal and parallel to each other.
3. Diagonals are equal and bisect each other.
4. Opposite angles are equal.
5. The sum of the interior angles is 360 degree.
6. The diagonals bisect each other at different angles. One is an obtuse angle and another is an acute angle.
7. If the diagonals bisect each other at right angles, then the rectangle is known as a square.
A diagonal of a rectangle is a diameter of its circumcircle.
8. When a rectangle is rotated along the line joining the midpoint of the longer parallel sides, we obtain a cylinder, the cylinder diameter is equivalent to length of rectangle and height of the cylinder is equal to the width of rectangle.
9. When a rectangle is rotated along the line joining the midpoint of the shorter parallel sides, we obtain a cylinder, similarly the cylinder diameter is equivalent to width of rectangle and height of the cylinder is equal to the length of rectangle.
Important formula of Rectangles
If the length is L and Breadth is B.
1. Area = L x B
2. Perimeter = 2(L + B)
3. Length of the diagonal of a rectangle = √L2 + B2
