Multiplying fractions with Common Denominator with Examples
Fractions Multiplication with Common Denominators
Fractions that have common denominators are known as like fractions. Addition and subtraction of like fractions are different from addition and subtraction of unlike fractions, but the method of multiplication of like fractions and unlike fractions are same.
Multiplying fractions with like denominators is same as multiplication of unlike fractions.
The method of Multiplication of fractions with common denominator is same as multiplication of two fractions.
Let us understand this with an example.
Example: Multiply 4/3 x 5/3
Here are steps given below.
Step 1: Multiply the numerators, 4 x 5 = 20
Step2 : Multiply denominators, 3 x 3 = 9
Step 3: The product of numerators is 20 and product of denominators is 9. So the product of
4/3 x 5/3 = 20/9,
which cannot be reduced. Therefore answer is 20/9.
Example: Multiply 2/5 x 4/5
Step 1: Multiply the numerators, 2 x 4 = 8
Step2 : Multiply denominators, 5 x 5 = 25
Step 3: The product of numerators is 8 and product of denominators is 25. So the product of
2/5 x 4/5 = 8/25
which cannot be reduced. Therefore answer is 8/25.
Example: Multiply 3/2 x 5/2
The product of numerators is 3 x 5 = 15
and product of denominators is 2 x 2 = 4.
So the product of 3/2 x 5/2 = 15/4,
