How many lines of symmetry a regular octagon have ?
Lines of symmetry in a regular octagon
What is line of symmetry ?
If a given line splits a given figure into two identical halves, we say that the line has a line of symmetry or that the figure is symmetrical about the line and line is called a line of symmetry or the axis of symmetry.
A shape may have more than one line of symmetry depending on its angles and the lengths of each side.
For example, a rectangle has two lines of symmetry because it can be folded in half both horizontally and vertically to create mirror images.
A regular octagon is a polygon with eight equal sides and equal angles.
Below figure shows lines of symmetry in a regular octagon.
There are eight lines of symmetry in a regular octagon with equal sides and angles. This is due to the fact that an octagon may be folded in half eight different ways such that one side perfectly fits the other. The octagon can be folded by drawing a line through each of its four opposing angles and at the midpoint of each of those lines.
Additionally, it has an order eight rotational symmetry, which implies that if we rotated an octagon eight times in 360°, the result would be the same.
